Festival Joy Overshadowed by Early Incidents
The Basant 2026 celebrations began at midnight with traditional enthusiasm, but the festive atmosphere was quickly marred by reports of serious accidents across different parts of the city. Rescue officials confirmed that several injuries linked to kite flying and related activities were reported shortly after the festival commenced.
Authorities said the incidents have once again raised concerns about safety enforcement and the continued use of hazardous kite strings during the festival.
Motorcyclist Critically Injured by Kite String
One of the most serious non-fatal incidents occurred in Defence Phase 5, where 21-year-old Rafi Tanveer was returning home on a motorcycle when a kite string suddenly wrapped around his neck.
According to rescue officials, he sustained deep neck injuries and was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Medical staff provided urgent care as the severity of the wound required specialized attention.
Such incidents involving motorcyclists remain among the most reported dangers during Basant, particularly when metallic or chemically coated strings are used.
Multiple Injuries Reported Across Lahore
Within a span of three hours, several additional injuries were recorded.
In Gulshan Ravi, 45-year-old Shabbir suffered facial and nasal injuries after a kite string struck him. Rescue teams provided on-site medical assistance.

Fatal Electrocution Incident
The most tragic incident occurred near Sukh Nehar, where 25-year-old Ali Rashid lost his life.
According to rescue authorities, he climbed an electricity pole in an attempt to retrieve a cut kite. During the attempt, he suffered an electric shock and died on the spot.
Officials stated that the body was later handed over to the family after completion of legal formalities.
Fatalities linked to kite retrieval attempts — particularly involving electric poles — have historically been among the most dangerous aspects of Basant celebrations.
Safety Measures Under Scrutiny
The early wave of incidents has placed renewed focus on festival safety arrangements. Emergency responders noted that despite awareness campaigns, the use of banned or dangerous kite strings continues to pose life-threatening risks.
Authorities had earlier advised citizens to avoid hazardous materials, install protective rods on motorcycles, and refrain from retrieving kites from unsafe locations such as rooftops and power infrastructure.
