Law and order in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was discussed as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged the provincial government to intensify efforts to maintain peace and improve security during a meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi in Islamabad.

During the meeting, the prime minister said that maintaining law and order is essential for public safety, economic activity, and national stability. He emphasized that provincial governments play a central role in counterterrorism and internal security and must further strengthen their efforts to address emerging challenges.

Focus on Security and Counterterrorism

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the provincial government needs to enhance institutional capacity to effectively counter terrorism and maintain peace. He added that improving coordination among provincial security institutions was critical to tackling security threats.

He reiterated that the federal and provincial governments would continue working together to eliminate terrorism and ensure lasting peace, particularly in sensitive regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Federal–Provincial Coordination Emphasized

The prime minister stressed that close cooperation between the federation and provinces was indispensable for national development and effective governance. He said regular communication and coordinated policymaking were necessary to address complex security and economic issues.

He also reaffirmed that the federal government would extend full support to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa within its constitutional mandate to promote peace and public welfare.

Development and Public Welfare Discussed

Shehbaz Sharif said the provincial government is constitutionally empowered and should prioritize initiatives in key social sectors, including health and education, to improve living standards for the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He assured federal cooperation for development projects, infrastructure improvement, and employment generation, stating that balanced growth across all provinces remained a core government objective.

Security Situation and Regional Issues

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi briefed the prime minister on the security situation in the province and shared concerns related to terrorism. He also discussed ongoing operations in sensitive areas, including the Tirah Valley, and the impact of security measures on local populations.

Both leaders agreed on the importance of balancing security operations with humanitarian considerations, particularly regarding displacement and rehabilitation of affected communities.

Other Matters Reviewed

The meeting also covered discussions on outstanding federal dues and the broader political situation. Views were exchanged on possible protests expected on February 8 and their potential impact on public order.

Senior federal leaders Amir Muqam and Rana Sanaullah were present during the meeting, while the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa delegation included Provincial Finance Adviser Muzzammil Aslam.

Commitment to National Stability

Concluding the meeting, the prime minister said national unity, stability, and prosperity could only be achieved through cooperation, consultation, and shared responsibility between the federation and provinces.

Both sides agreed to continue consultations on security, development, and governance issues to ensure peace and progress in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and across the country.
