China Mediation Efforts Increase as Beijing steps up diplomatic engagement aimed at easing tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. However, officials in Islamabad have indicated that meaningful diplomatic progress may remain difficult unless Kabul addresses security concerns raised by Pakistan.
According to diplomatic sources, Pakistan has informed China that it will maintain its current policy of limited engagement with the Taliban administration due to ongoing concerns about militant groups operating from Afghan territory.
China Intensifies Diplomatic Outreach
China has recently accelerated diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions between the two neighboring countries. Beijing sent its special envoy for Afghanistan to both Kabul and Islamabad in an attempt to facilitate dialogue and encourage de-escalation.
Officials say the envoy is currently engaged in discussions with representatives from both governments to explore possible ways to improve bilateral relations and prevent further tensions along the border.
The diplomatic initiative reflects China’s broader interest in maintaining stability in the region, which is important for economic connectivity and regional cooperation projects.
Discussions With Afghan Leadership
China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation with Afghanistan’s acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
During the discussion, both sides reviewed the evolving regional situation and exchanged views on ways to reduce tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Beijing expressed hope that both countries would demonstrate restraint and resolve their differences through dialogue and direct communication.
Chinese officials also reaffirmed their willingness to continue playing a constructive role in promoting reconciliation and stability between the two neighboring states.
Pakistan Maintains Current Policy
Despite acknowledging China’s diplomatic efforts, Pakistani officials reportedly informed Beijing that a return to normal diplomatic engagement with Kabul would not be possible without concrete changes on the ground.
Sources familiar with the discussions said Pakistan believes it has already explored various diplomatic channels to address its concerns regarding militant groups operating from Afghan territory.
Officials said Islamabad had raised these concerns through bilateral channels as well as through friendly countries, but no significant policy shift had been observed from the Afghan authorities.
Concerns Over Militant Groups
Pakistan has repeatedly expressed concerns about the presence of militants affiliated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan and other armed groups allegedly operating from Afghanistan.
According to Pakistani officials, reports from international monitoring bodies, including those linked to the United Nations Security Council, support Islamabad’s position regarding militant activity across the border.
Afghan authorities, however, have maintained that Afghan territory is not being used for attacks against neighboring countries and have described the issue of militant groups as Pakistan’s internal matter.
Pakistani officials have rejected this position and continue to call for verifiable assurances that Afghan territory will not be used for cross-border militant activities.
Diplomatic Engagement Still Possible
Pakistan’s Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi confirmed during a weekly briefing that Pakistan would continue its current Afghanistan policy despite requests from some countries to increase diplomatic engagement with Kabul.
He stated that Islamabad requires credible guarantees from Afghan authorities that their territory will not be used for terrorism against Pakistan.
Until such assurances are provided, officials say the current policy is likely to remain unchanged.
However, diplomatic sources have suggested that a temporary reduction in tensions during the upcoming Eid period cannot be ruled out, even though broader issues between the two countries remain unresolved.
Regional Stability a Key Concern
Analysts say China’s mediation efforts highlight growing concerns about stability in South Asia and Central Asia.
Both Pakistan and Afghanistan play important roles in regional connectivity and security, making cooperation between the two countries critical for broader regional stability.
Diplomatic observers believe continued engagement and dialogue may eventually help address security concerns and reduce tensions between the neighboring countries.
